FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: I am confused about the changes. Will MadCat continue to screen in the Bay Area?
A: YES. While MadCat cannot guarantee all filmmakers will screen at our Bay Area venues some programs will indeed screen in the area as part of our tour! MadCat will make all its programs available to touring venues with the aim to give your work more exposure on a national scale.

A: Each year MadCat's touring venues change. In the past we have screened at: Brown University, Harn Museum of Art, Rhode Island School Of Design, Harvard Film Archives, Olympia Film Society, College of the Atlantic, UC Santa Cruz, Chicago Filmmakers, Anthology Film Archives and so many more venues.

Q: My film was made in 1987, can I still submit it to MadCat?
A: YES! MadCat accepts films and videos made any year. You could have made it in 1913 and we would still be interested in seeing it. MadCat is committed to showcasing a wide variety of films old and new.

Q: I am a woman and I co-directed my film with a man, can I still submit?
A: Yes! As long as one of the directors is a woman MadCat will accept your submission.

A: No, we are afraid not. MadCat's only parameter is that the films and videos submitted are directed by women.

A: Yes. MadCat will accept films and videos about any topic. While we are a women's film festival we do not give priority to projects about women. We give equal weight to films and videos about women and men and boys and girls. We only ask that the film is directed or co-directed by a woman. Send your submission our way.

Q: Does my film have to be a premiere?
A: No, but we please include a full list of previous screenings with your entry.

A: If you are sending in multiple submissions please include a separate form and submission fee per submission. While MadCat prefers separate tapes per entry we do accept compilation tapes. Please label tapes with title of film/video, entrants name, address, phone and email address. Be sure to mark compilation tapes clearly.

Q: How many submissions does MadCat receive?
A: MadCat receives more than 1300 submissions yearly. The festival showcases approximately 80 to 95 shorts and features each year. While MadCat showcases primarily short films and videos, the festival always screens a selection of feature films.

Q: I just completed a music video, would your festival be interested in this kind of work?
A: While MadCat has not often screened music videos we do accept all genres of work and would be happy to receive your submission.

Q: I am a local filmmaker and want to find out if I can pick up my tape after MadCat makes its decisions. I am looking to save money and this would really help me out. Let me know when I can pick up my tape.
A: MadCat receives more than 1300 submissions each year and thus it is difficult to make tapes available on an individual basis to local filmmakers. Please feel free to include return postage for a "media mail" package. This is cheaper than sending your package first class. Ask your local post office for details. You can also drop your package through our mail slot and save money that way - while including return postage. Please do not ring the MadCat doorbell.

Q: I am a local filmmaker and want to drop off my entry at your office. Is that OK?
A: Yes, feel free to drop it through our gate but please do not ring the doorbell. Things get very busy around submission time and we often cannot come to the door.

Q: I am an international entrant and am not sure how to include a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope for return of my materials but I really want my materials back! What do I do?
A: If you are an international entrant do not use regular stamps from your country they will not work in the US. Go to your post office and ask them what you will need for return delivery from the US to your country. There are pre-paid stamp vouchers you can buy. Be sure to weigh your package so you know how many vouchers to buy.

Q: I have one copy of my VHS or DVD and want to be sure I get it back after you make your decisions.
A: Never send a master of a submission. If you send a self addressed stamped envelope we will be sure to send it back when final decisions are made.

Q: My film is 2 minutes - will you accept it?
A: We accept films and videos for submission of all lengths and genres. Send it our way!

Q: My film is 2 hours - will you accept it?
A: We accept films and videos for submission of all lengths and genres. Send it our way!

Q: Why can't I use a Meter Machine for return postage of my materials?
A: By the time MadCat sends back packages to entrants it is many months later and the post office will not accept outdated metered mail.

Q: What happens to tapes that do not have a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope included?
A: MadCat keeps some submissions for consideration in future years and recycles other tapes.

Q: When and how will I hear back about my submission?
A: MadCat notifies filmmakers each May. If you include a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope you will receive notification in your package. If you did not, MadCat will either email or send you a letter. Be sure to take madcatfilmfestival.org out of your spam filter.
